Why “Saving Money” with AI and Cheap Labor Will Cost You More in the Long Run
In today’s world of apps, DIY tools, and “free” robot labor, it’s tempting to think you can cut corners on professional design and marketing. After all, why pay for experience when there are dozens of platforms claiming they can do it faster and cheaper?
Here’s the hard truth: what you save on the front end will almost always cost you far more in the long run.
Aside from the fact that cheap apps and automated design platforms don’t come with the years of training and expertise that a professional brings to the table, the formats you receive from these avenues are rarely compatible with modern-day commercial presses. That means when it’s time to actually print, publish, or scale your materials, you’re likely to hit a brick wall.
What you’re really paying for with “robot design” is a concept—something that may look good on your screen but often can’t hold up in the real world. The fonts aren’t licensed, the colors aren’t calibrated, and the design itself often breaks basic rules of layout, proportion, and branding. And here’s the kicker: once you’ve fallen in love with that “concept,” you’ll likely end up having to ask a professional to recreate it. But in most cases, that’s impossible without starting over—because the foundation itself is flawed.
So, here’s the choice:
- Trust and pay professional marketers and designers to do what they’ve been trained, equipped, and called to do—and honor their charges, just like you expect your own customers to respect your invoices.
- Or go the DIY/cheap route—but start setting aside funds for when the “fix” ends up costing more than if you had invested in quality from the start. And don’t assume that since you have something that’s “already designed,” the charges will be less to have the job (re)done right.
Be Certain…
- Will you receive a brand guide with your logo? Doubt it!
- Is the “free” logo file you’re getting vector? Don’t know? Better get your wallet out. Read more here.
- Are the fonts in your logo licensed? Maybe look into a lawyer (or ask AI if it’ll represent you in court)
- Do a quick scan of your competition… do their “flyers” and social posts look similar to yours? If you’re working with robots, their cookie-cutter designs are fine… until you realize your marketing looks exactly like your competition’s.
What IF…
- Your customers wanted you to double-check what your “cheap competitor” did for them… for FREE?
- Your customers knew that you didn’t think your business was worthy of creating a marketing budget?
- You saved a ton of time and over-thinking regarding your marketing and you left it to the professionals?
- You put a dollar amount on the value of your hourly time as a business owner and calculated what you’ve spent “saving money” while you and the robots DIY your marketing like it’s a weekend hobby?

As designers, what we long for more than anything is for customers to stop asking us for free advice on which AI-generated logo or concept they should use. Honestly… we can’t even grasp the reasoning behind this slap to the face.
Design is no different than any other service industry: you wouldn’t expect a mechanic to spend their time checking to see if their competition did the job correctly, nor would you ask them to rebuild your car for free because you broke it trying to save money. You wouldn’t expect a contractor to advise you without charge regarding a “Pinterest idea” that violates building codes. And you wouldn’t expect your own customers to question every charge on your invoices. So why are YOU leaving your business in the hands of an inanimate app? You are literally releasing control of your brand into the “hands” of a robot instead of a trusted professional!
The bottom line? Professional design and marketing aren’t expenses—they’re investments. And like any smart investment, they pay off when you trust skilled, professional people to do the work the right way.
Let’s get real… we know AI is here to stay… and we even USE it… Heck, we had AI help write this blog about why you shouldn’t use AI… (and we had to EDIT IT because…. it had all kinds of errors). We’re not just out here whining about having to compete to get paid for what we do. As the HUMANS who have been leading this industry for a long, long time… yes… we ARE tired of getting requests regarding AI-generated work, but most of all we hate seeing the customers we care about take the cheap route. Your business deserves MORE. Sure, it’s nice that the robots jump when you say jump… and it may be handy to have one trillion whimsical versions of your request generated at the drop of a hat… but in the long run, YOUR customers are catching on, and the human brain won’t buy into these robot-born advertisements for long. There’s a time and a place for everything – and AI can be a great ASSISTANT, but it shouldn’t be the visual foundation that you base your business on. Cheap parts make for cheap products. Unless your mission statement goes something like “we do the cheapest job possible using the cheapest tools and systems”, then perhaps you should think twice before chatting it up when it comes to marketing your valuable business.
